Oral Leases Renew September 1

The 129th Turner County Fair has come and gone. It always amazes me that we spend a year planning for the fair to have it come and go in just a few days. I don’t think we could have asked for any better fair weather this year. It was great. It was so nice to see everyone (animals included) enjoy themselves this year. I always enjoy getting out and visiting with everyone at the fair and of course sampling all of the good food!
I want to say thank you to all of our Turner County 4-H sponsors—without your support we would not have the program that we do. A big thank you also goes out to all my livestock committees and all the volunteers who help with weigh-ins, check-ins, and all the different livestock shows. Also, a special thank you goes out to all the 4-Hers, parents, and volunteers who have assisted with pre-fair clean-up/set-up and with post-fair clean-up. I truly do appreciate your support and all your help that you provide our 4-H program.
As the Turner County Fair wrapped up, summer is coming to a close, and school has started, we find ourselves making plans for the upcoming year. Farmers and landowners who are involved with an oral lease will be faced with many decisions. One of these decisions involves the land they lease or lease out. Oral farm leases will automatically renew for the 2010 growing season on September 1st, 2009 unless written notice of intent to terminate or modify the existing lease is given before that date. Any lease that automatically renews will carry the same terms and conditions as the existing lease.
If notice is given to modify or terminate the existing lease, you need to remember that the existing lease still remains in effect until March 1, 2010, at which time the new contract becomes effective. It is important to remember that any lease agreement made for more than one year must be a written lease if it is to be considered a valid lease. Any landlord or tenant who wants to terminate or modify an existing oral lease must notify the other party by September 1, 2009.
